The column was erected in 180 AD to commemorate the battles
of Marcus Aurelius on the Danube. In 1588 it was restored on the
orders of Pope Sixtus V and the figure of Emperor Marcus Aurelius on
its summit was replaced by one of Saint Paul to de-paganize it.
