The original foundations of the Campanile dating from 1173, are
about 10 feet deep. They began to give way before the third story
was completed (1274). Nevertheless construction on the tower continued
until it was completed in 1350. Recently it has been stabilized by
underground structural work and the visible additions to the tower itself.
