Fiesole is about 5 miles from Florence (Firenze) in the hills to the north. In addition to these two churches, there are abundant Etruscan and Roman remains, including a beautifully situtuated amphitheatre. Fiesole predates Florence which was established in the 1st century BC by the Romans. Florentine troops destroyed most of Fiesole in the 12th Century and it has long been a retreat for summer visitors escape the heat and humidity of the valley on its breezy hilltop. We discovered that it's windy in the winter too.
