The 10 Charcoal Kilns

Death Valley National Park, California

Designed by Swiss engineers and built by Chinese laborers in 1879.
Workers filled the air tight kilns with pine logs and fired them.
Burning which reduced the wood to charcoal took 6 to 8 days.
Cooling took another 5 days. The charcoal was hauled 30 miles west to a smelter.
The kilns were closed after only 3 years of use.
