Ha Giang 08

I took a week off and put 1500KM on a rented motor scooter starting in Hanoi and heading up along the chinese border. I didn't bring my camera so the only pix from the trip are from the one day I travelled with a couple of other guys because we had to share a government-mandated guide (the guy on the russian Minsk motorbike) and they took a couple of shots.

The scooter was a 125cc Honda Future Neo, great product, I'd get about 110 MPG, good when you're buying gas a liter at a time out of whiskey bottles on a little table under a tree). I'd turned down the Minsk in favor of some modern japanese engineering and was glad. Hydraulic disc brake was nice on mountain roads that were sometimes more potholes and stones than pavement, which had to be shared with kids carrying bundles of sticks that blocked their vision, construction workers carrying pickaxes and steel poles sideways on motorbikes, hotheaded goats, lane-blocking snakes, slow-to-catch-on water buffalo, panicking fire-drill chickens, jumpy newborn colts).
