Palenque is the site of an ancient Mayan city from 300 AD to 800 AD. The peak of the city was in the 7th century under two rulers, Hanab Pakal and Chan Bahlum. It isn't known what brought about the collapse of the city. It is in the jungle, and the jungle keeps trying to reclaim it; a group of workers was scraping off recent green growth from one of the pyramids.
We arrived when it opened, at 8 am and it was dark and drizzly, which meant it wasn't crowded. The later photos are from the museum on site.
