Vie Cave, Etruscan path near Sovana 6751

They aren't sure what these were for. They were either simply paths cut in the rock, or had some ceremonial purpose. The groove on the ground is for rainwater, so you can walk on the edges and not get wet.

Some say it might have been hidden pathways, with enemies all about but to me it looks more like, "Hey, this mountain rock is in my way."

Luckily tufa rock is "soft" but it obviously wouldn't be that easy to do by hand.
