Hampi is the modern town near the ancient ruin of Viyayanagar, a powerful Hindu city until it was taken by Muslim rulers in 1565.
I wondered why there weren't more tourists at this weird beautiful place, and it appears to be because it is hard to get to. It has no airport nearby. I got there by an 8 hour drive over bad roads from Bangalore.
The first day I saw the northwest part of the city that is called the Sacred Center, starting on one side of Hemakuta Hill, a huge volcanic granite mound with many small temples from the 9th to 11th century.
