Richard,

Glad you found them of interest. I haven't met many outsiders when visiting there which surprises me.

The villages you mention are all in the Rongjiang/Congjiang area. Usually I head for the markets, find some interesting people and then travel with them back to their villages. Once I've made their acquaintance, I'm keep in contact with them to find out about weddings, bullfights, festivals etc. So few people visit that they're usually very welcoming, particularly if I take copies of the photos back.

If you want to e-mail me at nick.mayo@msa.hinet.net, when I'm back in Taiwan next week and have access to a Chinese keyboard I can send you a little more info. on where the villages are and the names in Chinese.

Cheers, Nick

P.s. if you particularly interested in that area, there's more in the Guizhou set at http://www.flickr.com/photos/nick_mayo_remote_asia_photo/sets/

Hi Nick,

really enjoy looking at your photographs. You really know your way around Guizhou.
I thought I knew it pretty well but you have been to a few places I have not heard of before, particularly on your visit in autumn 2010 around Rongjiang and Congjiang. Was your trip arranged by a local guide or did you find out about these places yourself?
I was hoping to make a visit to some of the villages, particularly the ones I have not been to before ie BaiPa,Chin Hwa, BaShu, Wuei, Gui Lai.
Would it be possible to confirm where these places are? I'd love to go and have a look.

Once again great pics.

All the best,
Richard

Hi Nick! This is Horst from Munich, Germany. I would ask you, if you ever have stayed in Chinas Sichuan district, looking for the famous dwarfs in the HUILONG village. It seems to be a restricted area to strangers, because they are not looking very human and are smallish than pygmies... about 1,15 meters to 63,5 centimeters! The zone is in the lonesome mountains of Bayan Kara Ula... I have tried to connect chinese people to tell me more about them, because it«s very difficult to get information, and maybe to see first photos of that human phenomenon, but unfortunately i found none until now. Do you have perhaps better information, do you have heard something about that on your exploration tours? I would appreciate and thank you, if you can tell me more. If you never have been there, maybe it«s an proposal for your next journey ;)
Ah - some hint: This story was first mentioned in a book from a german researcher called Hartwig Hausdorf, "The Chinese Roswell" ... maybe you have more luck to get new information about the descendants of the famous Dropa Stones and Baigong Tubes there.

Thank you very much and good luck, if this is a challenge for you or other readers/researchers here in the guestbook!

I used to think you were just a hard-nosed businessman content to spend your weekdays at meetings of international bankers, and then run with them at the weekends. How wrong I was. I would very much like to do what you are doing on a smaller geographical scale by bicycle, but will have to continue to work like a slave for many years to come first. At least I can dream about it for now, and just take mediocre shots around southern Taiwan.

Nick,

Think you would really appreciate the BBC DVD series "Tribe" I purchased it recently and think its the Apex of ethnic cinematography. Might even give you some ideas. Easy on the mijyou. When are you going to make it out.

Great pictures, Nick. Digital or analogue?

(Are you the same MHT "hasher" I met years ago?)

Hi Nick
Lovely photos, thanks. Do you do much work around Taiwan. I'm a amater, keen to flex some wings here, by teaming up with someone more established. I live in Taipei. Let me know, thanks.

Dear NicK:

We haven't spoken for a long time (probably since your MHTCO days). I was in the ACC for dinner tonight, saw your exhibition and just wanted to pass along my congratulations on your exceptionally good photos. This is really impressive work. I appreciate your sharing your it with rest of the ACC membership.

Congratulations - the best photos I have seen for a long time. Being an avid Yunnan traveller, may I ask where and when was the "Off to the Festival" taken ?
