Twelve birders came to enjoy the excellent hospitality at the home of David and Susan Raines for their annual Sparrow Day celebration. The beautiful fall day started with a light frost, and the birds were very active. There was hot coffee, hot cider and a bonfire to drive away the chill. After birding in the morning the group was served a declicious meal including Santa Fe soup, sandwiches, dips, and lots of sweets for dessert. It was a perfect fall day of birding with friends.Thirty-nine species of birds were found for the day including 9 sparrow species including Junco and Towhee. The highlight of the day was a Lincoln's Sparrow that was found in David's field, which had been allowed to grow this year to form excellent sparrow habitat. In previous years the field had been planted in sorhgum.
