By moving quietly and stopping each time the bird looked up I was able to move to within about 15 feet of this male Pileated Woodpecker that was feeding on the rotting log of an old barn. The bird didn't know I was there until it heard the clicking of the camera. It finally looked up and saw me, but instead of flying away it just nervously moved up to the next log giving me more of an opportunity to get photos. Finally it hopped up to the top log, stared at me for a few moments then flew down into the nearby woods.
