Pileated Pays a Visit

This female Pileated Woodpecker found the dead cherry tree I left standing in our yard. I left the tree because the smaller birds and the hawks use it as a perch. This bird has been visiting almost every day now to search for insects in the dead wood, but it is often frightened by other birds. It doesn't seem to notice me as I quietly and very slowly slide open the window to take photos.
