The better DoF I think I can explain: I shot at 28mm=~140mm with reversed 50mm lens, your pichttp://www.pbase.com/ragnarandren/image/35519302 is shot at 58mm=~340mm? (and also 'somethin'reversed'?), at 340mm?, even at F8, your DoF is bound to be smaller.
