This image of the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396) is my first attempt at creating a narrowband image in the Hubble colour palette. The image is based on 12 x 5 minute exposures in each of the following colour channels - Sulfur II (Red), Hydrogen Alpha (Green) and Oxygen III (Blue) filters. I would have typically thrown out 1 or 2 of the subs in each channel because of the quality of the star shapes but needed the data for this processing exercise. The images were made through an Astrotech 111mm f/7 refractor and an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera.
All raw data calibrated and stacked with ImagesPlus 4.25 as well as some basic image processing. Final image was completed in Photoshop CS5. Original combination created a very green image with hints of yellow. Thanks to Craig Temple from the ImagesPlus YahooGroup for help with some of the basics and pointing me to Bob Franke's excellent tutorial on fixing the green cast when using the Hubble palette. Final processing included Jay Gabany's LCS processing in Photoshop.
