Peachy

Well maybe not just Peachy. I haven’t seen Peachy in well over a year and there he was back to Wilkes-Barre after being in Baltimore. I knew he had been in Baltimore because Peachy wrote to all of us friends c/o the Drop in Center, “Reach.” Whenever a new letter came Stef the centers director would call out for everybody to be quite and she would read the letter out loud to all of us. This is something that she’s done for a long time when the street folks would move on or just leave and they would write. Well there was good ol’ Peachy back in his regular spot with Billy another old friend whom I’ve know almost since I first stared my work on the streets. Peach gave me a strong handshake and a hug and we caught up on things. He was disappointed that we hadn’t written back to him and I felt kind of guilty in my not having done that. You know how it is, things get busy and time passes. Sorry Peach! He said he had to comeback to town to check on his “dysfunctional family,” meaning his street family. We sat there the three of us catching up and going over a list of what had been happening on the streets since he had left. I ended up telling him of old friend who had died and that he hadn’t heard about. It’s really so sad to tell of the toll the streets take every year. I was glad to have seen Peachy and Billy and I know we will cross paths again soon.
