On the Streets of Philadelphia.jpg

I’ll try to keep this short, but I guess it might add to the flavor of this image. I was in Philadelphia last summer walking the streets and alleys of the inner city taking photos of people. My major body of work is related to homelessness. I had just started down this alleyway when this man spotted my camera. He came over to me and said, “hey man take my picture.” I was surprised but after he repeated his invitation a few more times, I figured, “oh what the heck.” I soon realized he was very drunk and as that thought went through my mind he took off his shirt and began posing like the bodybuilder he obviously was. My next thought was “how the $&)(#@ do I get in these situations?? I took a few shots and thanked him and prepared to leave. He walked over and said, “OK now pay me!” Hey I’m not gonna pay you I replied and reminded him that it was he who said, “hey take my picture.” Next thing I know I’m in a headlock, in an inner city alley with a drunk pissed off bodybuilder who has his massive arm around my head. Now I’ve been in a few situations having worked the streets as a street photographer for a number of years, but I’ve never encountered anything like this before. My mind raced around trying to figure out what to do as we waltzed around that alley. I could see my small-town newspaper headline reading, “Former College Professor dies in Metropolitan alley at the hands of deranged bodybuilder.” Subtitle reading, “but he got a great photograph.” I fumbled in my pocket as we danced and found a crumpled fiver. I took it and held it out away from this manic and as he went for the five, I went the other direction. It was that or strangulation I guess. Well I think this isn’t a bad photo I lieu of the circumstances. Hey anybody want to go shoot some pictures with me?

Ron (or anyone else),
I've been out shooting in the streets of NYC with Gary (aka Mashuga) It's really not so bad...as long as you can run faster than Gary you're fine :-D

Gary,
You told me this story but I hadn't seen the shot. As always, brilliant. You are able to capture in a photo peoples soul and spirit.

No, I don't want to shoot pictures with you! This guy's facial expression and body language make alarm bells ring and you must have had earplugs in not to hear them. That said, you got a great shot for a mere fiver and a near death experience! I'm a big fan of your portrait work and am glad to have found you again since you stopped posting in the KM challenges. You are now officially bookmarked and it won't cost you a cent :-) Voted.
Cheers,
Ron LaCroix
