powerfull, in the way that they know there is no hope but they can smile, beacuse they have already given up first, and now are a peace with themselves knowing no need to be part of the rat race and pretend like the rest, just be happy being alive and living each aday as it, happy journeys.

What contrasts in their expressions! The father (I assume) with distrust and sadness and longing...the boy with such hope, trust and full of possibilities still, but a sense of being tired.
