José David Alfaro Siqueiros (December 29, 1896 in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico - January 6, 1974 in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico) was a social realist painter, known for his large murals in fresco that helped establish the Mexican Mural Renaissance, together with works by Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, and also a Stalinist who participated in an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Leon Trotsky in May 1940.

This photo is meant to reference an individual singular work of art, by the great Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros. He was best known for his large painted murals. My reference photo was taken at an antique fair where I often go to take pictures. I find myself attracted to human faces represented or depicted in a myriad of ways and styles in the antique objects. I regularly find paintings and sculpture, masks, graphics and much more to photograph, and that is the origin of this particular photo. I don’t really have any other facts about it as a work of art, but when I looked at it again I thought it had a strong parallel quality to a particular work of art by Siqueiros, called “Echo of a Scream.” I remembered the painting fairly well, and now searching it out and looking at it again for this series, that I that I think the quality of both photo and painting are quite similar. I’ve had such an enjoyable time trying to make these kind of connections between my photos and artworks, that I know my way of seeing is being challenged all the time by this ongoing process and this series. One of my teachers once told me “there’s a big difference between looking and seeing.” As always thanks for looking and seeing.
