Centralia, Pennsylvania is only 15 miles from my home, but it might as well be a million. If you are not familiar with the story of Centralia it is worth pursuing and there are a number of sites on line where you can learn much. In 1963 a garbage fire caught a coal vein on fire and it spread underground where it continues to burn to this day. Most of the town’s residents have moved or were moved by the Federal Government because of the danger from toxic gasses and the danger of collapse. There are only a few people left there as residents. The town is an attraction for tourists and is a great curiosity even with the danger. I have been photographing there for many years and it is an endlessly changing landscape. A true new American Ghost Town.
