“Hell tinged white” Centralia

Centralia, Pennsylvania.
For many years underground coal veins beneath this once booming town have been burning, allowing gasses and steam to escape through vents in the surface of the earth. When it snows the gases and steam carve and sculpt the snow and ice into strange and interesting patterns. The combination of snow and ice, against the backdrop of veils of gaseous clouds make for an eerie and often beautiful vision.

“Centralia is a borough in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. Its population has dwindled from over 1,000 residents in 1981 to 12 in 2005[1] as a result of a 40-year-old mine fire burning beneath the borough. Centralia is now the least-populous municipality in Pennsylvania.” (Wikipedia®)
