This beautiful Victorian-style building is the second oldest museum on the National Mall. Originally named the National Museum, it opened to the public in 1881. Over the years, it has housed many different collections and special exhibits.
Sadly, it has been closed since 2004 and is slowly deteriorating. The Smithsonian has put out a request to have it redeveloped, but there are no immediate plans for renovation (despite the signage posted on the doors.)
