Although West Springfield, Massachusetts, has long been a suburban community, until well into the 20th century it also provided fresh produce to Springfield and surrounding towns. Nowadays, it seems as if huge new homes are being built on every available piece of land, and young people are growing up without a sense of our past. As my small effort to preserve some of our history, I am searching out and photographing those barns that still remain even though the surrounding farmland is gone. These are not the picturesque barns with silos commonly found in dairy areas, but more modest structures once holding several horses and perhaps a few cows and more recently tractors and other farm machinery. Today only a few still house any animals, but they are all a legacy of our past.

When I first started this project, I expected to find perhaps a dozen barns, but at last count I was up to 35 or 40 barns and/or carriage houses tucked away in every section of town, including even the most urban areas.

I will be adding more photos as I get them. For most of the remaining barns I will have to go on private property, so it will probably take awhile. Please check back.
