On the second weekend of September, I joined some folks from the Springfield Naturalists Club at Stump Sprouts in West Hawley, Massachusetts, for a program of nature-related activities. The goldenrods were in full bloom in all the fields with monarch butterflies fluttering among the plants. One evening the monarchs massed in hundreds or even thousands in a nearby tree as they continued their southern migration. September also seems to be mushroom season, and I was struck by the variety of fungi found in the surrounding woods. If you can identify any of the species, please leave a note. Stump Sprouts is a perfect place for rejuvenation...as we looked out over the mountain ranges, there wasn't one building in sight, and at night not one light was visible. It is truly a special place.
