There was once a ski area on Mt. Tom, as well as an Alpine slide during the summer. When they closed down several years ago, the new owner started a huge quarry there, and it looked as if that beautiful place would be destroyed. Then a public-private consortium was formed to raise funds for buying back the mountain. Very limited quarrying will take place for the next few years, but the mountain has been saved.
On October 17, a friend and I attended a nature photography workshop sponsored by Trustees of Reservations (one of the groups instrumental in rescuing the mountain). I hope these photos show why this is a place worth preserving.
OMG! I had no idea that gorgeous mountain was in jeopardy. I'm sure glad there are many activist sprouting up to preserve those places that are significant, such as Mount Tom. The view over the hamptons is just awesome at times.
