Pine Log WMA is full of old Iron Ore Mining areas. This is an abandoned mining pit. According to a local I talked with, he told me this pit was being mined when they hit a major underground water table which filled the pit in a matter of days. The old steam shovel and other equipment still sit at the bottom of the pit which is around 900 feet deep. The green grass is actually algae that is growing on top of the high sulfur content water. Walk on this grass and you will sink quickly.
This was the end of the line for the day. We were 8 miles from the WMA entrance and it was getting late. The road ahead dropped at a 45 degree angle and I didn't want to try and climb back up in the dark. We turned around and headed home for the evening.
