Rock of Cashel

Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary

The word "Cashel" is an anglicized version of the Irish word Caiseal. The translations means 'fortress' which is exactly what it was used for centuries ago.

A spectacular archeological site, it lies on the outskirts of Cashel on a large mound of limestone. An ancient fortification, it's impressive stone walls encircle a complete round tower, a roofless abbey, a 12th century Romanesque chapel, and numerous other buildings and high crosses.

your pictures inspire me so much. it is absolutly gorgous there. My name is Cashell and I was named after the rock of cashel. I'm from WAshington state, I'm 3/4 irish and am 29 yrs old and learning all i can about my ancestry. Hope to someday be able to walk thru the rock of cashel!

Beautiful pictures. Have been there twice now and both times had very profound feelings in the main alter area of the Cathederal. I could not get my breath and had tears rolling down my face. Has anyone else had this experience?

Marlene-Wonderful pictures. My husband and I were there Oct. 30, 2007. the Rock of Cashel was one of two of the most incredible sites we saw in Ireland (the other being the Cliffs of Moher. Thanks for the tour.

Marlene - Enjoyed/ing your site, thank you! I recently visited Ireland and the Rock of Cashel and was wondering if you knew the name of the home/farm that was below the castle - I believe it would have been to the south but I am not sure. Great photos - very nice!!!
