Dunbrody Manor House, Hook Lighthouse and Slade Castle

Dunbrody House is a charming 1830's Georgian Manor House Hotel and Restaurant that we stayed at for two days in Ireland. The accomadations were wonderful and the food was absolutely fantastic. It sits serenly hidden on 300 acres of gardens and parkland in Arthurstown near the Hook Peninsula – just a short drive east of Waterford.

Hook Lighthouse is a medieval lighthouse dating back from the early 13th century. It is thought to be one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world.

Slade Castle was forfeited by the Laffan family in the aftermath of the 1641 Rebellion. The ruins of this 15th century tower house stands on a tiny harbor on the Hook Peninsula and is within walking distance of the lighthouse. Mike and I walked the jagged shoreline between the lighthouse and the castle.

Cassidy Laffan There is no Laffan County in Ireland nor a Laffy River. Most Laffans I have read about come from Co. Wexford, CO. Limerick, Co. Tipperary or in the case of my forbears Co. Waterford. These counties are all close to each other and it is likely that one could make the connections between most Laffans from 1641 onward. There were a lot of very accomplished people with the name Laffan over the last 200 years. I grew up in Co. Hastings, Ontario, Canada where there were very few Laffans. My g. g. grandfather left Ireland in 1845 with his wife Margaret Roach of Co. Wexford. I have done my family history in Canada. If anyone is interested please contact me. My Husband is Michael Laffan, who was born in Kereight, Ballyhogue, Enniscorthy, co Wexford in l943. His father was James Laffan, who was one of eleven children born to Briget and james Laffan . Both of whom are buried in the graveyard in Galbally, Ballyhogue. This Laffan family is Wexford born since the l8th century and many headstones are to be seen in the said graveyard.. any info re laffan family would be of great interest to my husband. Thank you..
