Caracol, Lomanai (both in present day Belize) and Tikal (in Guatemala) are among the many remnaining sites of the once extensive Mayan culture consisting of city states scattered across Mesoamerica. These excavated ruins are but a small sample of these once highly populated sites (evidence suggests that Lomanai for example has over 30,000 structures in the surrounding area). Decoding of the few surviving Mayan Codex has allowed a glimpse into the history of this advanced society and it's sudden demise. Current thought includes contributary causes such as warfare and ecological devastation brought on by overuse of resources. Possibly a harbinger of our own future.
