The pilgrim on the Chemin St. Jacques de Compostelle would only earn his shell after completing the pilgrimage. It would be sewn on his hat, bag, or cape. The origin of the shell comes from a legend saying that St. Jacques saved a prince from drowning off the coast of Galicia in Spain. The prince’s body was miraculously covered in shells.
