My traveling companion—whom I won’t name, as it’s a private matter—and I were wandering aimlessly through the Asti area (a sub-region of Piedmont) when, quite unexpectedly, we kept finding ourselves at religious sites, despite having no real intention of doing so.
We arrived at this place, known as the Abbey of Vezzolano.
The term "abbey" has long been used incorrectly—even by the state authorities responsible for managing the site—given that the church was never actually an abbey. Its proper name is the Canonry of Santa Maria di Vezzolano. But let’s not get bogged down in unnecessary pedantry.
The fact remains that the Abbey of Santa Maria di Vezzolano is a religious building in the Romanesque and Gothic styles—one of the most significant medieval monuments in Piedmont—located in the municipality of Albugnano, in the province of Asti.
