The Basilica of Superga, or Royal Basilica of Superga, sits on Superga Hill just northeast of the city of Turin. It was built by order of King Victor Amadeus II as a thank-you to the Virgin Mary for defeating the French in 1706 after the Siege of Turin. Because of this, it is considered a celebratory monument.
Legend has it that the king chose this specific hill out of all those surrounding Torino for a very particular reason: anyone arriving from France would find it staring them right in the face. They'd have no choice but to look at it not just as a monument, but above all, as an everlasting reminder... of the defeat they suffered.
