Looking toward Vittorio Veneto square...

Torino (Italy)

Vittorio Veneto square, just called more commonly "Piazza Vittorio" from the locals, is one of the most beautiful and important squares of the Piedmontese capital. The square is located in the centre of Turin, on the banks of the river Po, just in front of the Church of the Great Mother (connected with the square by Vittorio Emanuele I bridge). From the square, going down towards the river one can reach the Murazzi area, famous for its lively night life, especially during the summer.

With more than 38,000 square meters, Piazza Vittorio is one of the largest squares in Europe, and is suitable to accommodate the most important events in the city such as the celebration of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of Turin, with fireworks and free concerts.

The history of the square is old and dates back to the early of 19th century when it was included in the proposed extension of the city towards the river Po. Initially, and for almost a century, the square was named after Vittorio Emanuele I then changed its name at the end of the World War I after the victory of Vittorio Veneto (having to choose a square to commemorate this battle it was chosen this one because it was already known in town by the simple name of Piazza Vittorio).

The square has long been used as a "parade ground" for military gatherings, under the Reign of Savoy as well as under the fascist dictatorship.

The square is lit by beautiful streetlights and it's surrounded by porticos where you can walk on rainy days.

Today Piazza Vittorio is a very important gathering place for the people of Turin. Under its arcades there are cafes and bars where you can stop for a break and admire the majesty of this square a few steps from the Po.
