Looking at so many people enjoying their lunch made Sergey feel nearly starved.
I have to confess that my devilish nature pushed me to take advantage of the moment and I showed him a small kind of "Fish & chip" shop Italian style ( well it was not a real fish & chip, but I don't know how to translate it correctly in English, in Italian it would be called " friggitoria"), on a small sign by the shop window they promoted their absolutely delicious " sgabei".
I didn't know what sgabei might be exactly, but I pretended to be fully informed and I suggested to Sergey with absolute determination to get there and to buy one sgabeo, telling him it was a very popular local street food.
Sergey followed my advice and came back after a few minutes with an enormous and greasy thing, filled with sardines. He bravely ate it until the last bit.
Then he told me seriously:
"This was the first time I tasted one sgabeo and it will remain the only one, but it was a funny experience"
The sgabeo is a typical food of Lunigiana. It is leavened dough for bread, cut into strips, fried and salted that is traditionally eaten plain or stuffed with cheese, ham or fish.
