By the end of 14th century, Venice had become one of the richest states in Europe, dominating the commercial traffic in the Mediterranean and with the Orient.
It became the largest of the maritime republics and was the most powerful state of northern Italy until 1797, when Napoleon invaded the Venetian lagoon and conquered the town.
