Noblesse oblige...even among birds!

Isola Madre - Lake Maggiore (Italy)

Golden pheasants, blue and white peacocks strolled about, showing a total disdainful indifference for us.


Many small multicoloured parrots looked at them from enormous aviaries, envious of their freedom.
A colony of Monaens Elic parrots live on the island and have even managed to nest here.


The island was once a hunting reserve and even Napoleon Bonaparte came here to hunt.


Nowadays the pheasants and the peacocks can relax and take it easy, but I seriously suspect that their life would not have been so careless centuries ago, when gorgeous banquet were surely organized in the palace on the island to entertain refined guests.


The cooks' contributions included pastry castles, pies filled with live birds, gilded roast chickens and fire-breathing roast swans and peacocks, re-dressed in their plumage....
