La fête des lanternes, telle qu'elle se pratique en Chine, est une tradition millenaire. Fête nocturne par excellence, elle se déroule durant le cycle des festivités du Nouvel An lunaire alors qu'à la tombée du jour, adultes et enfants vont à la promenade une lanterne à la main. Les motifs traditionnels de plantes, d'animaux et de scènes mythiques, naguère de papier et de soie, sont maintenant souvent faits de matériaux plus modernes, tels que le nylon. Le spectacle de tous ces passants arborant des sources lumineuses est merveilleusement festif.

The Lantern Festival,
This evening celebration is held during the New Year cycle of festivities, as adults and children carrying lanterns stroll through the streets at dusk. Traditional motifs of plants, animals and mythical scenes, once fashioned from paper and silk, are now often made out of nylon and other modern materials. The sight of all these people out strolling with their own sources of light is splendidly festive.
The Magic of Lanterns features new thematic lanterns in all shapes and sizes, as well as over 700 superb traditional lanterns every year. Visitors can also enjoy jasmine-scented green tea and delicious Chinese pastries, and even prolong the magic by taking home tiny paper Chinese lanterns, available at the Chinese Garden gift shop.
