Musée National de l'Automobile in Mulhouse owns one of the best car collections in the world
which was Schlumpf brothers one.
Schlumpf brothers, rich textile manufacturers, started to buy old cars from 1964. A team, in one
of their factories, was in charge of rebuilding the cars and this was made in a perfect secrecy.
Year after year, they brought to Mulhouse 400 and more models...
In the seventies, textile industry was declining strongly in France so that they've been obliged
to sell their business. The secret collection was discovered and, because it was threatened to be
sold in order to fill the financial gap, listed as historical heritage by state council in 1978
and sold to the museum's association in 1981.
The museum opened in 1982 and displays the collection in three great themas: the automotive
adventure, the race, and the masterpieces. What makes this collection unique in the world is the
number of Bugatti which is second to none. Mulhouse is very close to Molsheim where almost all Bugatti cars have been made.
Light conditions were difficult specially in the masterpieces show room and my small
built-in flash was too weak.

Marc,Chaque photo merite un temps d'arrêt;Je connai bien ce musée mais n'y suit pas retourné depuis 10 ans au moins;ton travail d'orfevre est magnifique,tu fais resortir tous les points qui t emeuvent avec un grand talent.

Merci pour les bon photos fait en la lumiere mauvais. I'll have to place this museum on my list of must sees should I be fortunate enough to visit France once again. Since I got bit by the car bug a couple of years ago I have found this to be once the most challenging subjects to photograph. It seems I'm either fighting uncontrollable reflections on bright sunny days, poor lighting in museums or trashing the electronics in my camera while shooting during a rain storm. If anyone can recommend a book on automotive photography, I'd be most grateful.
