Rainlilies

These are shots of the beautiful rainlily flowers, so named because they bloom heavily after rain and storm. They are drought resistant and willing to flower at the slightest provocation, but only transiently - for as short a period as half a day. Why rainlily at Maplewood? Rainlily is the name of a 24-hour crisis support center for victims of sexual violence operated by the Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW), a social services charity organization in Hong Kong. Maplewood Education Services was a corporate sponsor in the Rotary RainLily Project, a community service project to benefit ACSVAW in their educational and community outreach programs to increase awareness of sexual harassment, sexual violence, and sexual equality issues among school children and the public. Looking at these pictures, one can see how the rainLily in bloom exudes strength and hope, and reflects the tenacity and positive outlook of the female victims despite their setbacks. (Photos taken over a period from September 2006 through May 2007, often after extended periods of heavy rain or shower.)
