USDA lists 6 subspecies (ITIS lists even more) of which two are found in WA state:
ssp. caespitosa: tufted alpine saxifrage
ssp. subgemmifera: tufted alpine saxifrage
H&C lists three varieties:
var. minima:
var. emarginata: found subalpine OM and Cascades from north to Mt. Rainier (ciliated leaves)
var. subgemmifera: found CRG, coastal WA to Island Co and OM (long pilose leaves, sprawling, buds in axils)
Note sepals and stigma much shorter than rounded petals, matted, small rosette of lobed leaves. Russet hairy flower stems.
