Common Names: Artic Sweet Coltsfoot, Alpine or Arctic Butterbur,
Palmate Coltsfoot, Western Coltsfoot
H&C lists two varieties:
var. nivalis: smaller, found at high elevations.
var. palmatus: larger, found at low elevations.
WTU lists the above two varieties and adds another:
var. sagittatus: found in the NE parts of WA state.
USDA lists above three and adds a forth.
var. vitifolius: unclear if it may be found in WA state.
Note stout flower stem with short pointed alternating clasping leaves. Additional oak like lobed leaves on single runner to side of flower stem. Can get large (up to 24 inches). Early flowers are bristle like and off-white. Blooms like dandelions. Grows alongside roadways, wet areas at low elevation.
