This genus is controversial due to its ease in changing. It is opportunistic. There is some discussion of calling this genus Erythranthe with WA state being one of the few to use the Erythranthe name.
Both CA, USDA, and ITIS still use Mimulus. I use H&C for identification.
2 varieties:
var. caespitosus: small plant with generally a single large yellow monkeyflower, with small 1 cm leaves that freely branch.
var. tilingii: <10 inch, small leaves (1cm -2.5 cm) with 1-3 large yellow monkeyflower(s).
likes wet areas, subalpine to alpine. Few flowers (1-3) that are large.
Similar to M. guttatus which likes coastal to mid elevation, has stolens and generally > 5 flowers per stem.. Can hybridize when they intersect.
