T&G gives 3 varieties:
var. lepidus: (Elegant Lupine)Silvery hairs on the leaflets which are larger than other varieties (1.5 inches) with blue to violet tall flower spikes. Grows in rocky soils on prairies and foothills.
var. lobbii (Dwarf Lupine) Silvery hairs on the leaflets which are small (1/3 inch)with small blue to purplish flower cluster. Grows in open rocky soils at subalpine to alpine elevations.
var. aridus: (Desert Lupine)Small (3/4 inch) hairy leaflets. Flowers are violet, rarely white. Grows on dry rocky soils, shrub-steppe habitats.
