X-mas Moon at dusk

Seattle, WA

taken from my backyard.

the Moon was created when an object the size of Mars crashed
into Earth less than 100 million years after the Sun was born,
some 4.6 billion years ago.

The large round dark spot on the upper right side of the moon is
Mare Crisium (Sea of Crisis), the right eye of the Man in the Moon.
The two large semi-circular dark areas to the left (center) of
Mare Crisium is the Sea of Serenity (upper) and Tranquility (lower).
The lower central part of the Sea of Tranquility is where the first
man walked on the moon (Apollo 11). Apollo 17 landed above near the
upper notch which separates Tranquility from Serenity.

The large crater on the center edge is Copernicus (92 km wide).
The distinctive crater (with the center dot) to Copernicus's
upper right at the end of the Monte Apenninus chain is
Eratosthenes (58 km wide). The large crater above Copenicus
in the lower middle of Monte Alpes range near the top is
Crater Plato (101 km wide). The large irregular shaped crater
(with the two smaller craters inside, near the bottom is Clavius (225 km wide).
