USDA and ITIS lists two subspecies of which only ssp. californica is found in WA

ssp. californica: (California Poppy) found in WA and throughout the US and Canada
ssp. mexicana: (California Poppy, Mexican Goldpoppy, Mexican Goldenpoppy) found from CA, NV south to TX

Note unique yellow to orange single flower on tall stem. Flower closes at night and during cold, windy conditions. Grows in grassy open hillsides from low to high elevations.
