USDA and ITIS lists two varieties based on hairiness (lanate and tomentosa)of leaves and flowers. eFloras states "The taxonomic merit of the two varieties of Eriogonum pyrolifolium is dubious".
var. coryphaeum: underside (abaxially) of leaf is hairy, flower is densely hairy. Found throughout east of Cascades.
var. pyrolifolium: leaf is hairless (glabrous). flower is sparsely hairy, glandular hairs obvious. Found mostly in Wenatchee Mtns.
Note Wintergreen (oval - eggshape) type petioled leaf, cluster of white flowers. Purple anthers. Low growing.
