Common names: Fairy Slipper, Venus's Slipper, Deer's-head Orchid, Calypso Orchid

Wicki gives five varieties of which two are found in NA
var. americana: Rocky Mts, Northern States and Canada. Note significant and yellow hairs at throat.
var. occidentalis: western NA. Note few and white hairs at throat.

Note single oval basal (rounded) leaf. Erect flower stem, narrow-sharp pink sepals and larger pink petals with spotted, streaked bulbous bowl-like opening below (shape is variable).
Note color of hair to determine which variety it is. Only flower of this type as it is the singular species in this Genus. Plant lives five years.
