H&C lists two varieties:
var. multifida
var. saxicola
Note pink to red thickend styles. (vs. A. drummondii's's slender, yellow style). Blue/purple on outside of sepals. 6-20 inches tall, usually 2-3 flowers (var. multifida can have single flower), hairy (especially stem below mid leaf cluster and all leaves). Mid-point leaves smaller than basal leaves. Extremely variable and difficult to ID.
Found in open rocky habitats from low to high elevations.
Can be found in same locations as the very similar A. drummondii.
