Common Names: White Snakeroot, Richweed, White Sanicle, Tall Boneset

SYN: Eupatorium rugosum

USDA lists three varieties, ITIS list two:
var. altissima: found entire eastern US and Canada. Phyllaries 3–5 mm, apices not cuspidate
var. angustata: found TX to IL but not accepted by ITIS. Narrow leaves, west of Mississippi River.
var. roanensis: found AL to VA (including SC) called (Appalachian White Snakeroot). Phyllaries 4–7 mm, apices cuspidate to acuminate

these are most likely var. altissima.

Note large deeply veined stem leaves with large toothed edges. Clusters of five petal, star shaped, small white flowers with long pistil on top. One of the last flowers of the season.

White Snakeroot contains the toxin tremetol, and can pass through cows resulting in poisonous milk, and therefore called "milk sickness", thought to have killed Abraham Lincoln's mother.
