ORO DE LOS ANDES

A journey through Peruvian history. On this route we discover little visited corners of Peru. The intrepid traveller will be impressed by the beauty of the landscape and the imposing ruīns of 3 ancient cultures : the thousand years old magic of Chavin de Huantar, the Inca city of Huanuco Pampa and the Kingdom of the mysterious Yarowilcas.

The earthquake of May 31,1970 loosened some 15 million cubic metres of granite and ice from the west wall of Huascaran Norte The town of Yungay and almost all of its 26,000 inhabitants were buried alive A huge statue of Christ on a knoll overlooking old Yungay faces the Huascaran The earthquake killed about 50,000 people in other parts of the Callejon de Huayllas
One of the survivers acts as a guide in the Campo Santo The old cemetery under a layer of rock and mud A wrecked bus is one of the few witnesses of the 1970 disaster Remnants of the old catedral lie scattered around
Another piece of the old catedral is all that remains of the devastated village A replica of the old catedral has been erected to commemorate the thousands of people that lie buried beneath the visitors feet A huge original kero has survived the earthquake and the avalanche The road from Carhuaz to Punta Olimpica is one of the most spectacular in Peru
The road takes you into the Quebrada Ulta gorge up to well above the snow border The Carhuaz-Punta Olimpica road passes the southface of Peru's highest mountain, the Huascaran (6768 mtrs) Flowers and the snow of Huascaran in perfect harmony The curving road counts more than 50 hairpins before it reaches Punta Olimpica

Some of the main attractions of Chavin are the marvellous carved stone heads (cabeza clavos) The main entrance to the Castillo leads to underground passages, an exceptionnal feat of 3000 -year-old engineering The figures carved on the stones at Chavin indicate that the resident cult was based on the feline, birds and serpents The awesome Lanzon, a prism-shaped rock of carved white granite, which tapers 4 mtrs down from a broad feline head
Along the Callejon de Conchucos runs a good but narrow dirt road from San Marcos to Antamina The Conchucos region has seen only few foreign tourists and some discretion is called for The fertile lands around San Marcos Visitors to Antamina are obliged to travel with escorte provided by the Altamina mine
