Navigation Colliery, Crumlin

Situated just north of the site of the old Crumlin Viaduct in the Ebbw valley, Partridge Jones & Co. Ltd. began sinking this colliery in 1907.

The two shafts were completed in 1911 at a depth of 512 yards.

Known locally as the Navi, it was well known for the very rich Black Vein seam which in places reached a thickness of 18 feet.

In 1918 the workforce numbered 356, 525 worked there in 1923, and the Navigation employed 439 in 1945.

The NCB took over Crumlin Navigation at the time of Nationalisation in 1947 and the mine continued to produce coal until its closure in 1967-68.

A rare sight in South Wales nowadays, the chimney-stack and some of the pithead buildings are still standing, under the protection of a preservation order.

Despite their dilapidated condition, in the early morning when the sun hits the red & yellow bricks, the buildings glow like they're made of gold!
